BFA Photography Program Goals, Outcomes & Mission

Program Mission Statement:
The Bachelor of Fine Arts program in Photography prepares students for a career in the fields of creative media and photography and for graduate studies by: 1. Teaching the core competencies of research, writing, critical and thinking through the continual observation and analysis of the visual and social world. 2. Helping students develop practical technical skills required for a variety of photographic careers that include: documentary, fine arts and commercial applications of photography and media. 3. Providing a strong philosophical and historical foundation of the visual arts and its impact on contemporary social and visual culture.

Goal 1: To prepare students for graduate work by providing a strong philosophical and historical foundation of the visual arts and its impact on contemporary social and visual culture.
  1. Outcome/Objective 1.1: Photography graduates will demonstrate knowledge of the visual arts and the impact photoraphy has had on society and visual culture.
  2. Outcome/Objective 1.2: Photography graduates will demonstrate critical and creative thinking skills so as to analyze, discuss and critique photographic images considering technical, aesthetic, etihcal and conceptual applications and values.
  3. Outcome/Objective 1.3: Photography graduates will demonstrate the capacity to engage in a variety of media and create work that engages the viewer in a techonologically advanced world.

Goal 2: To teach students the technical skills required to succeed in a variety of photographic and visual careers, including documentary, fine arts, and other commercial applications of the field.
  1. Outcome/Objective 2.1: Photography graduates will demonstrate mastery of the technical aspects of the medium including: the camera, editing, lighting, imaging, studio techniques and printing.
  2. Outcome/Objective 2.2: Photography graduates will demonstrate ability to make, discuss and anaylize analog imagery.
  3. Outcome/Objective 2.3:Photography graduates will demonstrate knowledge of lighting techiniques in both the studio and the natural environment.
  4. Outcome/Objective 2.4: Photography graduates will demonstrate the ability to create and refine professional portfolios.
  5. Outcome/Objective 2.5: Photography graduates will be prepared to obtain internships.

Goal 3: To provide and practice the core competencies of research, writing, critical and thinking through the continual observation and analysis of the visual and social world.
  1. Outcome/Objective 3.1: Photography graduates will be able to discuss, write and articulate their work in relation to a broarder cultural dialogue that includes history as well as contemporary circumstances.
  2. Outcome/Objective 3.2: Photography graduates will be able to successfully embark on long term projects that would result in Independent research study and/or a Thesis.
