INTERNSHIP GUIDELINES
When students have reached the senior year of their BFA degree they can opt to take part in the Internship Program. Interning accounts for 9 academic credits. Many students are drawn to this opportunity because it provides a chance to sample working in the real world while still having the guidance of the University and the Fine Arts Faculty.

The time commitment of the 9-credit internship is 16-20 hours per week. In recent semesters, Department of Fine Arts students have interned in a wide variety of art and design establishments.

A listing of our internship sponsors to date is available to all juniors upon request. Juniors and first semester seniors who are planning to do an internship during their last semester must attend an internship meeting when announced. Special meetings are posted on the Student Information Board near the elevator outside the 4th floor art studios and in the Calendar of this site. Students are urged to keep themselves informed of such events at all times and discuss possible sites with their advisors during their Junior year.

Planning you internship:
  • Clearly define what career goal you want to aim for. Meet with your advisor to discuss the best possibilities for you.
  • Ascertain what you need, then research possible sites that might provide you with the experience that will help you meet your goals.
  • Choose a site that will help you will help you to gain new skills and provide more career possibilities.

Begin pursuing possibilities:
Call/query to see if the place that you are interested in is in need of interns – if so – find out procedure for applying. (Usually, they will ask you to mail or e-mail your résumé first.)

You should start this process at least 3 months before your internship period begins.

Follow up one week later with a phone call or e-mail to confirm that they have received your résumé. At this time, ask to make an appointment for an interview and/or portfolio review.

Once you have visited a few places, and you have been offered placement, provide your decision to them in a timely manner. You should also notify the places, which you declined when offered placement.  Do this via a phone call or e-mail, and follow up with a “thank you” letter.

Preparing to start:
Have site supervisor look over the contract and sign it. You must sign it too and bring the contract to the Department to obtain the Chairperson’s signature. We will then make a copy for you to give to your supervisor. You MUST provide your internship faculty advisor with the following information once your internship is set:

Your name
Your Home phone number, and your e-mail
Starting date and work hours
Establishment Name (Internship)
Establishment Address
Establishment Phone Number
Supervisor contact name
Website Address
E-mail

Note: You will be required to come to campus for two meetings during your internship semester. The first is usually planned half way into the semester; the second is planned close to the end of the semester. You are also expected to share your experiences and samples of work with the other interns and faculty at the end of the semester.

Remember that you follow “employer’s” schedule and dress code – not St. John’s University schedule.
The 9-credit internship, ART 4909, requires 15 weeks of part-time (16-20 hours/week), work.
Report any negative experiences immediately to your Art Department Internship supervisor.

Other items to be aware of:
Sometimes faculty supervisor might plan to visit you at your internship site. You and your supervisor will be notified if this is occurring.

Faculty supervisor will also have the responsibility of contacting your supervisor to check on your progress, He/she will also contact you to check on how things are going. Please call the office at any time or contact faculty supervisor or Chair if you encounter problems of any kind, if you are unhappy with the placement, or if you have any questions.

Remember that your internship is part of YOUR educational experience and as such should ideally serve to provide you with practical applications of all that you have learned… and more.
