Information on BFA Portfolio Reviews and Annual Student Exhibition:

A Portfolio Review occurs at the end of every semester and is mandatory for all art majors.

The Portfolio Review requires students to review the work they have produced during each semester and evaluate it critically. This in itself is a valuable activity. Many faculty members have end-term critiques with their students, helping them to select the best work for their portfolios. This can result in illuminating discussions of strengths, weaknesses, and directions for future efforts. Students must choose from three to five of their best works from each studio class. Each class must be represented by at least three pieces.

Portfolio reviews are MANDATORY for all BFA majors. The reviews adhere to the attendance policy of the Department for studio courses and as such, an unexcused absence for a review will negatively affect a final grade. Please refer to your studio class syllabus for details.

The Portfolio Review is very helpful to the faculty as a tool for learning about students within the department. It allows faculty to view your work even if they haven’t yet had you in their class. It also allows your current professors to see what you are producing in classes other than those they teach. This process gives the faculty an overview of your art work, in general, as well as a basic understanding of what type of artist you are, so that they can help you more effectively. Further, the Portfolio Review allows faculty to see what other professors have been teaching. This helps them plan their own classes to avoid repetition and build on ideas, contributing to cooperation and teamwork within the department.

Fall Semester Review: The portfolio review in December encompasses work the student has produced from September through December. Students will be engaged in a group critique by major. This serves as a mid-year evaluation procedure that will enable the faculty to keep an accurate track of each student’s progress and gives the student the chance to see the work and engage in conversations with their direct peers.

Spring Semester Review: The portfolio Review in May is conducted on a more personal level. One-two days are set aside for this review as needed. Students will be given twenty minute appointments for a portfolio review with 2-3 faculty members. Students are to sign up for their appointment in the Art Office. Sign-up sheets are posted in mid April. It is the student’s responsibility to make an appointment and show up on the day and time they selected.

Annual Student Exhibition: Each May the Department organizes an Annual BFA Student Exhibition in the University Gallery.  Students may submit up to 4 pieces for faculty consideration.  This exhibition is a "juried show" and as such, works are selected based on their creative and technical merit. A committee of 10-12 faculty members judge the submissions and make the selections for the show.  Due dates for submission are posted on the Calendar in this site and also made known to students by their faculty and Department notifications. Each year six students are selected to receive Certificates of Excellence.  These certificates are presented to the students during the opening reception of the exhibition.

Annual Student Exhibition:
Every year the Department of Fine Arts sponsors an exhibition of student work in the University Gallery. All art majors are expected to participate. Each student is asked to submit up to four works for consideration. An exhibition prospectus is available in the Department office in early April. Specific instructions for the submission of work is stipulated in the prospectus.

The work is juried by the faculty. Awards are presented to students whose work reflects excellence in creative and technical applications.

BFA students who neglect to submit work for more than two semesters will not be eligible to opt for a Thesis during their senior year.
